Can Seafood Be Refrozen?

If you've thawed seafood but didn't end up using it all, you may be wondering if it's safe to put it back in the freezer. The answer depends on how the seafood was thawed and whether it has been kept at a safe temperature.

Knowing when seafood can be refrozen helps reduce food waste while keeping your meals safe to eat.

When Is It Safe to Refreeze Seafood?

Seafood can be safely refrozen if it was thawed in the refrigerator and has remained cold the entire time. Fish, shrimp, scallops, crab, lobster, and other seafood that has not been left at room temperature can usually be returned to the freezer.

Although refreezing is safe in this situation, the texture may become slightly softer after being thawed a second time.

When Should You Not Refreeze Seafood?

Do not refreeze seafood if it has been left at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F (32°C). Harmful bacteria can grow quickly once seafood warms up.

You should also avoid refreezing seafood that has developed an unpleasant odor, slimy texture, or other signs of spoilage.

What About Cooked Seafood?

Cooked seafood can also be refrozen if it has been cooled quickly and stored in the refrigerator before freezing again. Properly stored cooked seafood is often a better option for refreezing because cooking helps preserve its texture compared to refreezing raw seafood multiple times.

Will Refreezing Affect Quality?

While seafood can often be refrozen safely, repeated freezing and thawing may reduce its quality. Moisture is lost during each thawing cycle, which can make fish less firm and shellfish slightly drier after cooking.

For the best flavor and texture, it's always recommended to freeze seafood only once whenever possible.

Tips for Freezing Seafood

To help maintain quality, follow these simple tips:

  • Thaw seafood in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
  • Freeze seafood in airtight packaging to prevent freezer burn.
  • Label packages with the freezing date.
  • Freeze seafood in meal-sized portions to avoid thawing more than you need.
  • Keep your freezer at 0°F (-18°C) or below.

Store Seafood the Right Way

Proper storage is one of the best ways to enjoy high-quality seafood at home. By thawing seafood safely and refreezing it only when appropriate, you can reduce waste while maintaining good flavor and texture.

Whether you're storing salmon, shrimp, lobster, crab, scallops, or other seafood, following safe freezing practices helps ensure every meal is both delicious and safe to enjoy.
